This three-hour program focuses on the nature and significance of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights and the continuing efforts to secure civil rights and freedoms in Australia. Centred on the Museum’s permanent exhibition, The Holocaust and Human Rights, students will contemplate the creation and the role of the Declaration as well as additional documents in protecting human rights in the contemporary world. In looking at the contemporary effectiveness of the document, students will look at one of four instances of rights abuses in Australia (teacher choice):
- LGBTIQ rights
- The rights of Indigenous Australians
- The rights of people with disabilities
- The rights of refugees and asylum seekers
The program includes:
- 1 hour Holocaust survivor talk
- 1 hour guided, or semi-guided tour
- 1 hour workshop with a Museum Educator
